How to write a great article

by Greg Digneo on February 19, 2009

Becoming published has long since been a way to establish credibility within your industry.  Small businesses whose stories were written in the local paper have always generated more leads than those who simply advertised in them.  It used to be that your only means to generate this type of publicity was to have a professional writer - associated with a publication - hear your story and write about it.

Now, there are a host of sites that are dedicated to publishing your story.  Most notably are ezinearticles.com, articlealley.com, and goarticles.com.  These are highly trafficked sites that allow you to publish articles and give various types of media the ability to find them and distribute them to their readers.

Given that everyone has the ability to be published; it becomes incumbent on the author to write crisp, clear articles that will be distributed frequently.  Shel Horowitz, owner of FrugalMarketing.com and author of the book “Grassroots Marketing: Getting Noticed in a Noisy World” points us to these five tips to writing an article that will not only help you get published, but also establish you as an expert and generate revenue:

  1. Write an article that’s unique, informative, helpful, understandable, and easy to digest
  2. Ideally, it should also be easy for the reader to implement the article’s advice
  3. Target it to the right people; don’t bother sending your article on beauty care to a website or publication focused on information marketing, for instance
  4. Make sure the resource box and credit highlight your expertise in the most relevant areas where you can help
  5. Consider offering incentives (e.g., free report) to move readers to your own website
